The West Siberian Laika is the most numerous and widely used hunting dog in Russia — a medium-sized, powerfully built spitz-type breed developed over centuries by the indigenous Mansi and Khanty peoples of the Ural Mountains and western Siberian taiga, where it was used to hunt a remarkable range of game including squirrel, sable, bear, elk, wild boar, and waterfowl across the vast boreal forests of the region. The word "Laika" derives from the Russian verb layat', meaning "to bark," and refers to a group of Russian and Siberian spitz-type hunting dogs that locate and hold game by barking — a hunting style known as "baying" — alerting the hunter to the quarry's location while keeping it treed or at bay. The West Siberian Laika is the largest and most versatile of the four recognized Laika breeds (the others being the East Siberian Laika, Russo-European Laika, and Karelo-Finnish Laika), and is prized above all for its exceptional nose, its ability to work independently across vast distances, and its adaptability to hunt virtually any game in any terrain or weather condition. The breed's dense, straight, harsh double coat — with a thick, woolly undercoat — provides insulation in temperatures as low as -60°F (-51°C), and comes in white, salt-and-pepper, gray, red, or brown, with or without patches. The West Siberian Laika was recognized by the AKC's Foundation Stock Service in 2006.
