The Swedish Vallhund — known in Sweden as the Svensk Valhund, meaning "Swedish herding dog" — is one of the oldest and most historically fascinating herding breeds in the world, with a documented history in Sweden stretching back over 1,000 years to the Viking Age. The breed is believed to have been the working cattle dog of the Vikings, and historical records and archaeological finds suggest that Vallhund-type dogs were present in Scandinavia as far back as the 8th and 9th centuries AD. The Swedish Vallhund bears a striking physical resemblance to the Welsh Corgi — both are low-slung, long-bodied, short-legged herding dogs with upright ears and a wedge-shaped head — and the relationship between the two breeds has been debated for centuries. The most widely accepted theory is that Viking raiders and traders brought Swedish Vallhunds to Wales (or Welsh Corgis to Sweden) during the Viking Age, and the two breeds share a common ancestor. The Swedish Vallhund's coat is a medium-length, harsh outer coat over a soft dense undercoat, always in a sable pattern of gray, gray-brown, gray-yellow, or red-yellow, with lighter shading on the muzzle, chest, belly, and legs. The breed may be born with a full tail, a stub tail, or no tail at all — all are equally acceptable. The Swedish Vallhund was recognized by the AKC in 2007.
