Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

🐕 Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Collection – France's Happy Little Rough-Coated Hound

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen — universally known as the PBGV — is a cheerful, compact, and wonderfully shaggy French scent hound from the Vendée region of western France, where it was developed over several centuries to hunt rabbit and hare through the dense, thorny bocage — the thick hedgerow and scrubland terrain of the Vendée. The breed's name is a precise physical description in French: petit (small), basset (low to the ground), griffon (rough or wire-coated), and Vendéen (from the Vendée). The rough, tousled double coat was essential for protection against the thorny undergrowth, while the breed's low, long body allowed it to work close to the ground following scent trails through dense cover. The PBGV is closely related to the larger Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and was bred down in size for hunting on foot rather than on horseback. The breed is renowned for its perpetually happy, extroverted expression — the result of its long eyebrows, beard, and mustache — and its merry, independent, and sociable temperament has earned it the unofficial title of "the happy breed." The PBGV was recognized by the AKC in 1991. Our collection celebrates this joyful French hound with original artwork across a curated range of USA-made home décor and gift products.
