The Parson Russell Terrier is the original working terrier bred by the Reverend John "Jack" Russell — a Devon clergyman and passionate fox hunter who, beginning in the 1820s, developed a strain of small, predominantly white working terriers capable of keeping pace with horses on the hunt and then going to ground to bolt foxes from their dens. The Reverend Russell was so dedicated to his terriers that he continued breeding and hunting well into his 80s, and his dogs became legendary throughout the West Country of England. The Parson Russell Terrier is the taller, more square-built, longer-legged variety of the Russell terrier family — built for running with the hunt — while the shorter-legged Jack Russell Terrier was developed for more intensive earth work. The two were separated into distinct breeds by the AKC in 2012, with the Parson Russell Terrier recognized as the original conformation show variety. The breed's coat can be smooth, broken, or rough, always predominantly white with tan, black, or tricolor markings — the white coloring was deliberately selected by Reverend Russell so that hunters could distinguish the dog from the fox in the field.
