The Welsh Springer Spaniel is one of the oldest and most historically documented spaniel breeds in the world, with a history in Wales stretching back at least 400 years and depictions of red and white spaniels in Welsh art and manuscripts dating to the 16th century. The breed is believed to be descended from the ancient land spaniels of Wales — dogs that were flushing and retrieving game birds in the hills and valleys of Wales long before the development of the modern English Springer Spaniel, to which it is related but distinctly separate. The Welsh Springer Spaniel's most immediately recognizable feature is its coat: a rich, deep red and white pattern that is unique among spaniels — no other color combination is permitted by the breed standard — with a silky, flat or slightly wavy texture that is naturally water-resistant and provides protection in the cold, wet Welsh climate. The breed is compact, slightly smaller than the English Springer, and built for endurance over speed — capable of working all day in the dense bracken, steep hillsides, and boggy moorland of the Welsh countryside without tiring. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is known for its devoted, gentle, and somewhat reserved temperament — deeply loyal to its family but typically more cautious with strangers than the more exuberant English Springer.
