The Spinone Italiano is one of the oldest pointing breeds in the world, with roots in the Piedmont region of northern Italy stretching back at least 2,000 years — some historians trace its ancestry to ancient Greek traders who brought wire-coated hunting dogs to the Italian peninsula. Robust, patient, and versatile, the Spinone was bred to hunt all types of game across Italy's varied terrain, from dense marshes to rugged mountain slopes, and its thick, wiry, weather-resistant coat and tough, webbed feet make it equally capable on land and in water. The name is believed to derive from the Italian word spino, referring to the thorny undergrowth the breed was built to push through. With its distinctive bushy eyebrows, long beard, soft amber or brown eyes, and gentle, almost human expression, the Spinone has a face that is instantly endearing. Good-natured, patient, and deeply devoted, it is as much a beloved family companion as it is a capable gun dog.
