The Lhasa Apso is one of the world's most ancient dog breeds, with a history stretching back over 1,000 years in the high-altitude monasteries and palaces of Tibet. Named for the sacred city of Lhasa, the breed was kept exclusively by Tibetan monks and nobility and was never sold — only gifted, and only to those deemed worthy. The Dalai Lama traditionally presented Lhasa Apsos as sacred gifts to Chinese emperors and visiting dignitaries, believing the dogs carried the souls of deceased monks awaiting reincarnation. Known in Tibet as Abso Seng Kye, meaning "Bark Lion Sentinel Dog," the Lhasa Apso served as an indoor sentinel in monasteries and palaces, alerting monks to intruders with its keen hearing and surprisingly deep, resonant bark. Its long, dense, floor-length coat — which parts naturally down the spine — provided insulation against Tibet's extreme cold, while its heavy fall of hair over the eyes protected against wind-blown debris at high altitude. Despite its small size, the Lhasa Apso has the confident, independent temperament of a much larger guardian dog. Our collection celebrates this ancient sacred breed with original artwork across 600+ USA-made home décor and gift products.
