The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier — affectionately known as the Wheaten — is a medium-sized, all-purpose Irish terrier with a history on the farms and smallholdings of Ireland stretching back at least 200 years, and possibly much longer. The breed was the working dog of the Irish tenant farmer — a dog that could not be owned by the landed gentry under Irish law, which restricted ownership of certain breeds by social class, making the Wheaten a true dog of the common people. On the Irish farm, the Wheaten served as a versatile all-rounder: herding cattle and sheep, hunting small game and vermin, guarding the homestead, and serving as a devoted family companion — all in a single dog. The breed's most distinctive feature is its soft, silky, gently waving coat of warm wheaten gold — a coat that is single-layered (unlike most terriers' harsh double coats), low-shedding, and considered more suitable for allergy sufferers than many other breeds. Wheaten puppies are born dark and gradually lighten to their characteristic warm wheaten color over the first 18 months to two years of life. The breed is famous for its exuberant greeting style — the "Wheaten greeting" — in which the dog leaps up to greet its owner face-to-face with unbridled enthusiasm, a behavior deeply embedded in the breed's character. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was recognized by the Irish Kennel Club in 1937 and by the AKC in 1973.
