The Water Spaniel family encompasses two of the most historically significant and capable water retrieving breeds in the world — the American Water Spaniel and the Irish Water Spaniel — each developed independently on opposite sides of the Atlantic to meet the specific demands of waterfowl hunting in their respective regions. The American Water Spaniel is one of the few dog breeds developed entirely in the United States, originating in the lake and river country of Wisconsin and Minnesota in the mid-19th century, where hunters needed a compact, versatile dog capable of working from small skiffs and canoes in the cold, marshy waters of the Great Lakes region. The American Water Spaniel is the official state dog of Wisconsin, designated in 1985. The Irish Water Spaniel is the tallest of all spaniels and one of the oldest spaniel breeds in the world, with a history in Ireland stretching back to at least the 7th century AD, though the modern breed was standardized in Dublin in the 1830s by breeder Justin McCarthy. The Irish Water Spaniel is instantly recognizable by its dense, liver-colored, tightly curled coat — which covers the entire body except for the face and a distinctive smooth, tapered "rat tail" — and its characteristic topknot of loose curls on the crown of the head. Both breeds share a dense, water-repellent curly coat, a natural affinity for cold water, and an enthusiastic, intelligent, and sometimes clownish temperament. The American Water Spaniel was recognized by the AKC in 1940; the Irish Water Spaniel in 1884.
