The Sussex Spaniel is one of the rarest and most historically distinctive spaniel breeds in the world — a low, long, and heavily built English gundog developed in the county of Sussex in southern England, specifically in the dense woodland and heavy clay farmland of the Sussex Weald, where its compact, powerful build and slow, methodical hunting style were ideally suited to working through thick undergrowth and hedgerows. The breed was developed in the late 18th century, most notably by breeder Fuller of Rosehill Park in Sussex, who spent decades refining the type. The Sussex Spaniel is unique among spaniels for two reasons: its coat color and its voice. The coat is a rich, golden-liver — a warm, burnished brown-gold that is unlike any other spaniel's coloring and is the breed's most immediately recognizable feature. And unlike most spaniels, which hunt silently, the Sussex Spaniel gives tongue freely while working — it vocalizes as it hunts, allowing the hunter to track its progress through dense cover by sound. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II, with only one breeding female surviving in England by the war's end; the entire modern breed descends from that single dog and a small number of others carefully preserved by breeder Joy Freer. The Sussex Spaniel was one of the ten original breeds recognized by the AKC at its founding in 1884.
