The Skye Terrier is one of the oldest and most historically storied terrier breeds in the world — a long, low, and elegantly coated Scottish terrier developed on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides, where it was bred to hunt otter, fox, and badger in the rocky, rugged terrain of the island's coastline and hillsides. The breed's distinctive physical profile — a body twice as long as it is tall, short but powerful legs, and a long, flat, straight coat that falls to either side of the body and veils the face — was shaped by centuries of working in tight burrows and rocky crevices. The Skye Terrier comes in two coat varieties: drop-eared (the more common) and prick-eared, and in colors including black, blue, dark or light gray, silver, fawn, and cream, always with black points on the ears, muzzle, and tail tip. The breed is most famous in history for Greyfriars Bobby — a Skye Terrier who, following the death of his owner John Gray in Edinburgh in 1858, reportedly guarded his master's grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard for 14 years until his own death in 1872. Bobby became an international symbol of loyalty and devotion, and a small statue of him stands near the kirkyard entrance in Edinburgh to this day. Queen Victoria was an enthusiastic Skye Terrier owner, which greatly boosted the breed's Victorian-era popularity. The Skye Terrier is now classified as a Vulnerable Native Breed by the UK Kennel Club. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1887.
