The Silky Terrier — known in Australia as the Australian Silky Terrier — is a small, elegant toy terrier developed in Sydney, Australia, in the late 19th century through crosses between the native Australian Terrier and imported Yorkshire Terriers. The goal was to refine the Australian Terrier's coat into the long, silky, flowing texture of the Yorkshire Terrier while retaining the Australian Terrier's hardier, more terrier-like body and temperament — producing a dog that was more refined in appearance than the Australian Terrier but more robust and spirited than the Yorkshire Terrier. The result is a breed that occupies a unique middle ground: small enough to be a true toy companion, but with the bold, alert, and inquisitive character of a working terrier. The Silky Terrier's coat is its most defining feature — a long, flat, glossy coat of the finest texture, always in blue and tan, parted down the middle of the back and falling straight on either side, with the blue ranging from silver-blue to pigeon-blue to slate-blue depending on the individual dog. Despite its refined appearance, the Silky Terrier retains genuine terrier instincts and was historically used to hunt and kill small snakes and rodents in Australian backyards and gardens.
