The Siberian Husky is one of the oldest and most genetically primitive dog breeds in the world — a medium-sized, powerfully built Arctic sled dog developed over thousands of years by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia, who depended on these dogs for transportation, hunting, and survival in one of the harshest environments on Earth. The Chukchi bred the Husky for a specific and demanding purpose: to pull light loads at moderate speeds over vast distances in extreme cold, covering hundreds of miles on minimal food — an extraordinary feat of endurance that no other breed could match. The Siberian Husky was introduced to Alaska in 1908 for sled dog racing and quickly proved its superiority, but the breed's most celebrated moment came in January and February of 1925, when a relay of sled dog teams — led in the final leg by a Siberian Husky named Balto — carried life-saving diphtheria antitoxin 674 miles from Nenana to Nome, Alaska, in just 5½ days through a brutal blizzard, saving the town from a deadly epidemic. Balto's statue stands in Central Park in New York City. The Siberian Husky's striking appearance — with its thick double coat, erect triangular ears, and eyes that can be blue, brown, amber, or heterochromatic — makes it one of the most visually distinctive breeds in the world.
