The breed comes in three coat colors: black (the most common and iconic), wheaten, and brindle. The Scottie has been a favorite of American presidents — President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Scottie, Fala, was so beloved that he accompanied FDR to wartime conferences, traveled on presidential trains and ships, and is the only presidential pet honored with a statue at the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C. President George W. Bush also kept two Scotties, Barney and Miss Beazley, at the White House. The breed is known for its bold, independent, and sometimes stubborn character — traits that earned it the nickname "the Diehard" in Scotland. The Scottish Terrier was recognized by the AKC in 1885.
