The Schnauzer is one of Germany's most distinctive and historically significant dog breeds — a wire-coated, bearded working dog developed in southern Germany, most closely associated with the Württemberg and Bavaria regions, where it served as a versatile farm dog, ratter, and guard dog for centuries. The breed's name comes from the German word Schnauze, meaning "snout" or "muzzle" — a direct reference to its most recognizable feature: the prominent, bushy beard and mustache that frame the muzzle and give the Schnauzer its unmistakable, almost human expression. The Standard Schnauzer is the original and oldest of the three sizes, with documented history dating to at least the 15th century — it appears in paintings by Rembrandt and Albrecht Dürer, and a statue of a hunter with a Schnauzer at his feet stands in the marketplace of Stuttgart, dated 1620. The Miniature Schnauzer was developed by crossing the Standard with smaller breeds including the Affenpinscher and Poodle to create a more compact ratter, while the Giant Schnauzer was bred up from the Standard using Great Dane and Bouvier des Flandres crosses for use as a cattle drover and brewery guard dog in Bavaria. All three sizes share the same wiry double coat, distinctive beard and eyebrows, and bold, intelligent temperament. The Miniature Schnauzer is consistently one of the most popular breeds in America. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1904 (Standard), 1926 (Giant), and 1933 (Miniature).
