The Samoyed is one of the most ancient and genetically primitive dog breeds in the world — a large, powerful, and strikingly beautiful white spitz developed over thousands of years by the Samoyedic peoples of northwestern Siberia, who relied on these dogs for herding reindeer, hauling sleds, and keeping warm by sleeping alongside their owners in the brutal Arctic cold. The breed's name comes directly from the Samoyede people, and the dogs were so central to their survival that they were treated as family members rather than working animals. The Samoyed's most iconic feature is its perpetual smile — the upturned corners of the mouth are a functional adaptation, not merely an expression: the curved lips prevent drooling, which would form icicles on the face in sub-zero temperatures. The breed's dense, double-layered white coat — one of the most profuse of any breed — provides insulation in temperatures as low as -60°F, and the shed undercoat, known as "Samoyed wool," has historically been spun into yarn and knitted into garments. The Samoyed participated in several historic polar expeditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Fridtjof Nansen's 1895 Arctic expedition and Roald Amundsen's 1911 South Pole expedition.
