🐕 Saluki Collection – The Royal Dog of Egypt and the Ancient Middle East

The Saluki is one of the oldest dog breeds in recorded history — a lean, elegant, and extraordinarily swift sighthound whose image appears in ancient Egyptian art dating back over 4,000 years, and whose ancestors are depicted in Sumerian carvings from as far back as 7,000 BC. The breed is named for the ancient city of Saluk in Yemen, and was known throughout the Islamic world as El Hor — "the noble one" — the only dog considered clean under Islamic law and therefore permitted to live inside the tent alongside its Bedouin owners. The Saluki was the hunting dog of pharaohs and Arab sheikhs alike, used to course gazelle, hare, and fox across the open desert at speeds that can reach 40 to 43 miles per hour — making it one of the fastest dog breeds in the world, capable of sustaining high speed over long distances in a way that even the Greyhound cannot match. Salukis were so prized that they were mummified alongside their owners in ancient Egypt, and were never sold — only given as gifts of the highest honor. The breed comes in two coat varieties: smooth and feathered, with feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. Coat colors include white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, black and tan, and tricolor. The Saluki was recognized by the AKC in 1927. Our collection celebrates this ancient and noble breed with original artwork across 600+ USA-made home décor and gift products.
