The Russian Toy — known in Russia as the Russkiy Toy — is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world and one of the rarest outside of Russia, with a history rooted in the aristocratic salons of Imperial Russia. The breed descended from English Toy Terriers imported to Russia in the early 18th century, which became enormously fashionable among Russian nobility during the reign of Peter the Great and remained a fixture of the Russian aristocratic lifestyle through the 19th century. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, the breed nearly disappeared entirely — the association with the aristocracy made keeping such a dog politically dangerous, and the breed was actively suppressed during the Soviet era. Russian breeders worked in near-secrecy to preserve the Russkiy Toy, and the breed was revived and standardized in the 1950s. The Russian Toy comes in two coat varieties: a smooth-coated variety with a short, close-fitting coat, and a long-coated variety with feathering on the ears, legs, and tail that gives it a particularly elegant, butterfly-like appearance. The breed is extremely fine-boned and delicate, typically weighing between 3 and 6 pounds, with large, luminous eyes and large, upright ears that dominate its expressive face. The Russian Toy was recognized by the AKC in 2022, making it one of the most recently recognized breeds.
