The Rottweiler is one of the oldest herding breeds in the world, with a history that traces directly to the Roman Empire. Roman legions marching through Europe kept large drover dogs to herd and guard the cattle that fed their armies — and when those legions passed through the region of what is now southern Germany, some of these dogs remained. In the town of Rottweil in Baden-Württemberg — one of Germany's oldest cities, founded by the Romans — these dogs were bred with local herding dogs over centuries to produce the breed we know today. The Rottweiler takes its name directly from this town. For centuries, the Rottweiler was known as the "Rottweiler Metzgerhund" — the Rottweil butcher's dog — used by butchers to herd livestock to market and to pull carts loaded with meat. The breed nearly went extinct in the mid-19th century when cattle driving was banned and railways replaced droving, but was revived by German breeders who recognized its value as a police and military working dog. The Rottweiler served in both World Wars as a messenger, ambulance, and guard dog. Today the Rottweiler is one of the most popular breeds in America, consistently ranking in the AKC's top 10, and is recognized as one of the most intelligent, loyal, and trainable of all working breeds.
