The Rat Terrier is a distinctly American breed — developed in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from a mix of working terrier breeds brought by English immigrants, including the Smooth Fox Terrier, Manchester Terrier, and Bull Terrier, later crossed with Whippets for speed, Beagles for scenting ability, and Italian Greyhounds for agility. The result is a compact, athletic, and extraordinarily versatile farm dog that excelled at two essential rural tasks: hunting and killing rats and other vermin in barns and granaries, and hunting small game above ground. The breed's name was reportedly popularized by President Theodore Roosevelt, who kept Rat Terriers at the White House and credited them with ridding the building of a rat infestation. At the height of their popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, Rat Terriers were among the most common farm dogs in America, valued for their tireless work ethic, intelligence, and adaptability. The breed comes in two size varieties — miniature (up to 13 inches) and standard (13 to 18 inches) — and in a wide range of coat colors and patterns, always short and smooth.
