The Pomeranian is a vivacious, fox-faced toy spitz descended from the large sled-pulling spitz dogs of the Arctic — a lineage it shares with the Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute, and Norwegian Elkhound. The breed takes its name from the Pomerania region of northern Europe (now split between Germany and Poland), where it was bred down from a much larger working spitz into the compact companion dog known today. Early Pomeranians weighed as much as 30 pounds; the dramatic reduction to the modern 3–7 pound toy size was largely driven by Queen Victoria, who became enchanted with smaller Pomeranians during a visit to Italy in 1888 and began selectively breeding for the smallest possible size. Her passion for the breed made Pomeranians enormously fashionable across Europe and America, and the AKC recognized the breed in 1888. The Pomeranian's most iconic feature is its spectacular double coat — a dense, soft undercoat beneath a long, harsh outer coat that stands away from the body, framing the face in a lion-like ruff — which comes in more color varieties than almost any other breed, including orange, red, cream, white, black, blue, sable, and parti-color. Despite its tiny size, the Pomeranian has the bold, confident, and sometimes bossy personality of a much larger dog.
