The Pekingese is one of the oldest and most historically significant dog breeds in the world, with a documented history in China stretching back over 2,000 years. The breed was developed exclusively within the walls of the Imperial Palace in Beijing — then known as Peking — and was considered so sacred that only members of the Chinese Imperial family were permitted to own one. Commoners who encountered an Imperial Pekingese were required to bow in its presence, and theft of a Pekingese was punishable by death. The breed's lion-like appearance was deliberately cultivated to reflect the sacred Buddhist lion, and the dogs were known in the Imperial court as "Fu Dogs" or "Lion Dogs." The Pekingese remained entirely unknown to the Western world until 1860, when British and French forces looted the Imperial Summer Palace during the Second Opium War and discovered five Pekingese dogs — the only survivors, as the Imperial attendants had killed the rest rather than allow them to fall into foreign hands. One of the five was presented to Queen Victoria, who named her "Looty." The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1906. Despite its small size, the Pekingese carries itself with the unhurried dignity and self-possession of a breed that spent centuries being worshipped.
