The breed appears in paintings by Old Masters including Titian, Rubens, and Rembrandt, and was a beloved companion of European royalty and aristocracy for centuries. Marie Antoinette was famously devoted to her Papillons and reportedly carried one under her arm on the way to the guillotine. The breed's most iconic feature is its large, fringed, wing-like ears that spread to the sides of the head like an open butterfly — giving the breed its French name. Interestingly, the drop-eared variety of the same breed is called the Phalène, French for "moth," and both varieties can appear in the same litter. The Papillon is consistently ranked among the most intelligent of all dog breeds — in Stanley Coren's landmark intelligence rankings, the Papillon placed 8th out of 138 breeds, ahead of many much larger working dogs.
