The Neapolitan Mastiff — known in Italy as the Mastino Napoletano — is one of the most ancient and visually striking dog breeds in the world, descended directly from the massive war dogs of ancient Rome. Roman legions used giant mastiff-type dogs in battle and in the arena, and the Neapolitan Mastiff's ancestors were among the most feared war dogs of the ancient world, used to charge enemy lines wearing spiked armor and carrying flaming torches. After the fall of the Roman Empire, these dogs survived in the rural areas around Naples, where they were used as estate guardians for centuries. The breed was nearly unknown outside southern Italy until 1946, when Italian painter and dog enthusiast Piero Scanziani exhibited several Neapolitan Mastiffs at a dog show in Naples and began the effort to formally standardize and preserve the breed. The Neapolitan Mastiff is immediately recognizable by its extraordinary abundance of loose, wrinkled skin — particularly around the massive head, face, and neck — its pendulous lips, and its slow, rolling, bear-like gait. Males can weigh up to 150 pounds. Despite its fearsome appearance, the Neapolitan Mastiff is deeply devoted to its family and notably gentle with those it knows.
