Brought to Hungary by the Cumans, a nomadic Turkic people, around the 12th and 13th centuries, the Komondor has guarded Hungarian sheep flocks on the Great Plain for over 1,000 years. The corded white coat serves a dual purpose: it provides insulation against both extreme cold and the summer heat of the Hungarian plains, and it protects the dog from the bites of wolves and other predators it was bred to confront. The Komondor is recognized as a national treasure in Hungary, and export of the breed was once restricted to protect the population.
