The Keeshond — pronounced KAYZ-hawnd — is a medium-sized Dutch spitz breed with one of the most distinctive and instantly recognizable faces in the dog world: a fox-like expression framed by a thick, silver and black double coat, and most notably, the breed's trademark "spectacles" — dark markings and shadings around the eyes that create the appearance of eyeglasses, giving the Keeshond its famously expressive, almost human look. The breed takes its name from Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer, an 18th-century Dutch patriot and leader of the Patriot political movement, whose dog became the mascot of the movement and a symbol of Dutch national identity. Keeshonden were traditionally kept as companions and watchdogs aboard the barges and riverboats of the Netherlands, earning the nickname "the Dutch Barge Dog."
