The Portuguese Water Dog — known in Portugal as the Cão de Água Português — is an ancient working breed from the Algarve coast of southern Portugal, where it worked alongside fishermen for centuries as an indispensable maritime partner. Portuguese Water Dogs were trained to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle and broken nets from the water, carry messages between boats and shore, and guard the catch — earning their keep on the fishing vessels of the Portuguese fleet. The breed's physical adaptations for water work are exceptional: a profuse, non-shedding coat in either wavy or curly form, fully webbed feet, and a powerful, muscular build that makes it one of the strongest swimmers among all dog breeds. The breed nearly went extinct in the early 20th century as motorized fishing replaced traditional methods, and was saved largely through the efforts of Portuguese shipping magnate Vasco Bensaúde, who established a breeding program in the 1930s. The Portuguese Water Dog gained enormous international recognition when President Barack Obama chose the breed for the White House in 2009, selecting Bo — and later Sunny — as the First Dogs of the United States.
