The "Bobtail" nickname comes from the historical practice of docking the tail to identify the dog as a working drover's dog, which exempted its owner from paying a tax on pet dogs. The OES first appeared at dog shows in the 1870s and was recognized by the AKC in 1888, making it one of the earlier breeds in the AKC stud book. The breed gained enormous popular recognition in the 1960s and 1970s through its role as the mascot of Dulux paint in the UK — a campaign so successful that the OES became synonymous with the brand for decades.
