The Leonberger is a magnificent German giant breed with a fascinating and deliberate origin story — created in the 1840s by Heinrich Essig, a politician and dog breeder from the town of Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg, who crossed Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, and Great Pyrenees with the explicit goal of producing a dog that resembled the lion on the town's coat of arms. The result was a breed of extraordinary size, beauty, and temperament: a lion-maned, golden-to-mahogany coated giant with a distinctive black mask, a flowing mane around the neck and chest, and a calm, patient, and deeply affectionate personality. Leonbergers were prized by European royalty — among their admirers were Napoleon III, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi), the Prince of Wales, and Otto von Bismarck. The breed nearly went extinct twice — once after World War I and again after World War II — and was painstakingly rebuilt each time by dedicated breeders. Today the Leonberger is celebrated as an outstanding family companion, therapy dog, and water rescue dog. Our collection celebrates this noble breed with original artwork across 500+ USA-made home décor and gift products.
