The breed nearly went extinct after World War II, when food shortages made it impossible to feed dogs of such enormous size — the breed was saved largely through imports from Canada and the United States, where a small breeding population had been maintained. Today's Mastiff holds the record as the heaviest dog breed, with males regularly exceeding 200 pounds.
