The Pharaoh Hound is one of the most ancient and visually striking dog breeds in the world — a lean, elegant, amber-eyed sighthound that bears a remarkable resemblance to the jackal-headed god Anubis and to the dogs depicted in ancient Egyptian art dating back over 5,000 years. Despite its name and Egyptian appearance, the Pharaoh Hound is actually the national dog of Malta, where it is known as the Kelb tal-Fenek — Maltese for "rabbit dog" — and has been used for centuries to hunt rabbit in the rocky terrain of Malta and Gozo. DNA studies have shown that the Pharaoh Hound is not, in fact, directly descended from ancient Egyptian dogs but is instead a primitive Mediterranean breed that independently developed its ancient-looking features — making it a remarkable example of convergent evolution in dog breeding. The breed's most extraordinary and unique characteristic is its ability to blush: when excited or happy, the Pharaoh Hound's nose and ears flush a deep rose-pink color, visible through its short, glossy, rich tan coat. This blushing response is unique among dog breeds. The Pharaoh Hound was recognized by the AKC in 1983.
