The Whippet is one of the most elegant and aerodynamically refined dog breeds in the world — a medium-sized sighthound developed in northern England in the late 19th century by working-class miners and mill workers in the industrial towns of Lancashire, Yorkshire, and County Durham, who bred a fast, versatile dog capable of racing, rabbit coursing, and ratting on a minimal budget. The breed was created through crosses between small Greyhounds and various terrier breeds, producing a dog with the Greyhound's explosive speed and the terrier's gameness and tenacity. The Whippet is the fastest domesticated animal of its weight, capable of reaching speeds of 35 mph (56 km/h) — faster than a Greyhound relative to body size — and was known as the "poor man's racehorse" because working-class families who could not afford Greyhounds could race Whippets on straight tracks in the streets and fields of the industrial north. Whippet racing — known as "rag racing" because the dogs were released by their owners waving rags — was a major working-class sport in Victorian and Edwardian England. The Whippet's short, smooth coat comes in virtually every color and pattern — fawn, red, white, black, blue, brindle, and all combinations — and the breed is known for its dual personality: an explosive, focused athlete on the coursing field and a calm, gentle, affectionate companion at home.
