The Otterhound is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world and one of Britain's most ancient — a large, shaggy, big-boned scent hound developed in medieval England specifically to hunt otters in rivers and streams. Otter hunting was a practical necessity in medieval Britain, as otters were considered a serious threat to fish stocks in rivers that provided a vital food source, and packs of Otterhounds were maintained by English royalty and nobility for this purpose. King John of England kept a pack of Otterhounds as early as 1212, and the breed was a fixture of English hunting culture for centuries. The Otterhound's physical adaptations for water work are extraordinary: a dense, rough, oily double coat that repels water and provides insulation in cold rivers, large webbed feet for powerful swimming, and a nose of exceptional sensitivity capable of following an otter's underwater scent trail across a river. When otter hunting was banned in Britain in 1978 due to declining otter populations, the Otterhound's primary purpose disappeared almost overnight, and the breed's numbers plummeted. Today fewer than 600 Otterhounds exist worldwide, making it rarer than many endangered wild animals. The Kennel Club lists it as a Vulnerable Native Breed. Despite its rarity, the Otterhound is a wonderfully affectionate, boisterous, and clownish companion.
