The Rhodesian Ridgeback is one of the most distinctive and historically remarkable dog breeds in the world — a powerful, athletic hound developed in Southern Africa, specifically in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), through crosses between European dogs brought by Dutch, German, and Huguenot settlers and the semi-domesticated hunting dogs of the indigenous Khoikhoi people. It is from the Khoikhoi dogs that the Ridgeback inherited its most iconic feature: a clearly defined ridge of hair running along the spine in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat, formed by two symmetrical whorls at the shoulders. This ridge is the breed's defining characteristic and the source of its name. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed in the late 19th century by Cornelius van Rooyen, a big-game hunter in Rhodesia, who selectively bred for a dog capable of tracking and holding lions at bay in the African bush — earning the breed its enduring nickname, the "African Lion Dog." The Ridgeback did not kill lions but used its speed, agility, and courage to harass and distract a lion, keeping it occupied until the hunter arrived. The breed's short, dense, wheaten coat — ranging from light wheaten to red wheaten — provides protection against the African sun and thorny bush.
